Oh social media, how you often flood us with unattainable images of bikini models, million dollar businessmen and “perfect” relationships. It seems as though we forget platforms like Instagram and twitter where not created to make us feel inadequate but to inspire us to share and discover … and this is exactly what Mariel Kirton has accomplished.
Mariel Kirton has embarked on a beautiful journey of capturing her Dad’s daily life since he’s been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at the age of 52. Her most popular post has been of Ray Kirton’s showing off his dance moves whilst humming along and laughing out loud with his family. The post was accompanied by a heart warming description- ‘Dad still absolutely loves listening to music and reacts so well to it. He tried to sing but can’t usually get the lyrics, but he’s always humming, dancing or saying, “this is a brilliant one”.’
Mariel does a great job at showing the humorous side of Alzheimer’s, by helping others see it’s far better to take it in your stride and often have a laugh with your loved one. In one of her posts she shows that her Dad had been doing some dusting – “Mum may have to go around correcting things, but it’s so good to get him to do things that make him feel useful and give him a sense of achievement’. Mariel gives great examples of sharing her dad’s enjoyment in situations that aren’t always real but bring him great happiness, just like thinking he is the presenter of the entertainment show he’s watching!
Mariel also ran in the Plusnet Half Marathon in Leeds last May, and she managed to raise a huge £2,194.00 for Alzheimer’s Research which surpassed her target of raising £1,000. She posted – “Thank you so much to everyone who has sponsored so far. please support this amazing cause if you haven’t already – for my amazing Daddy and people just like him.”
