So as you may know it is dementia Awareness week and we here at Nudgu feel incredibly passionate about making the most of these seven days.
Yet we want to know what Dementia Awareness Week means to you? Maybe it’s showing your support by wearing a blue dementia flower? Or it’s spending that little extra time spreading awareness social media.
However, we are interested to see how many of you would look at this week as a chance to show support to a total stranger. We want to know your opinion on how/if you would approach someone who you may suspect has dementia and looks as though they could use a helping hand.
So imagine, you have just popped into Tesco’s to quickly pick up a few bits and bobs when you see an elderly man wondering up and down the aisle looking confused and a little distressed. Now you may be in a bit of a rush, but something inside you can’t let you leave this man standing their confused and alone! But then you also think you might seem rude asking if he is okay or patronizing as to whether he needs any help? So you make out you are staring at which bread to buy for a little longer just to see whether his wife, son/daughter or even Carer comes round the corner to find him. But no one comes … so what would you do?
Now I know the immediate response would be to ask if he is okay, but those of us who know someone with dementia may be aware this can make them even more confused, distressed and even defensive.
So I thought that this week was a perfect time to become aware of how you would deal with this situation, as it’s something you may come into contact with in the future.
Now to make this awareness a little easier, here are some signs to look out for to help you identify if someone does have dementia.
Although it is a little harder to tell without knowing the person, these tips should give you some indication;
- Difficulty initiating and sequencing tasks
- Difficulty with movement
- Visual difficulties
- Language problems
- Unusual behaviors
So what would you do? There is no denying this is a hard situation to be in as realistically we all want to help, but sometimes it isn’t that straight forward.
We want to know your opinion!
