So this week is Learning Disability week, and it’s really important we all find a way to acknowledge, support and help raise awareness for those with learning disabilities. The focus for this year is to help make the relationship between employment and disability far stronger.
Around 8 in 10 working age people with a learning disability have one that’s mild or moderate, but fewer than 2 in 10 are in employment. We want this to change, and with the help of our support it can.
There are only 6% of people that have a learning disability known to local authorities and of working age that are in paid employment. Many businesses are unaware that studies have shown a significant benefit to businesses that employ people with a learning disability, including boosting staff morale and improving the public image of your company.
It’s challenging to find a job if you have a learning disability so if you/ a friend needs any help with this, the website called ‘mencap’ can offer you great help and advice on getting you started.
